1) How is the background error computed?

The background error for both the regional and global modes is currently computed using a similar method, the “NMC method”.  For the given regional or global model, one and two day forecasts verifying at the same time are collected over an extended period.  Statistics are then computed from differences between the verifying forecasts.  These statistics are the basis for the background error statistics.  (3/23/2004, rt)
